EMERGING FROM THE SHADOWS - REDISCOVERING THE LEGACIES OF WEINBERG AND KORNGOLD

Born in Warsaw and Vienna, bound by their Jewish heritage, composers Mieczysław Weinberg and Erich Wolfgang Korngold were both forced to flee the Holocaust, Weinberg finding refuge in the USSR, Korngold reinventing himself as a Hollywood film composer. Director Veronika Emily Pohl traces their contrasting lives and neglected legacies, through the efforts of conductor Constantine Orbelian and cellist Kristina Reiko Cooper to bring their music the recognition it deserves.

GRAMMY®-nominated US-conductor Constantine Orbelian, chief conductor of the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra, and Israel-based cellist Kristina Reiko Cooper who hope to facilitate the transcendence of the two composers’ legacy: Out of the shadows and towards the recognition their music deserves.

In adjacent segments we delve into the history of Weinberg’s and Korngold’s very contrasting lives. Born respectively in Warsaw and Vienna and bound by their Jewish heritage, both composers were forced to flee the horrors of the Holocaust during World War II: Weinberg finding refuge in the far eastern part of the U.S.S.R. before resettling to Moscow, while Korngold fled to the USA and established himself as a film score composer in Hollywood.

In today's turbulent times, 80 years after the end of World War II, the documentary "Emerging from the Shadows" reminds us how artistic resilience and integrity are values worth fighting as much as ever.

The film's director is Veronika Emily Pohl is a US-German journalist and documentary filmmaker. She specializes on artist portraits, music documentaries and multi-camera directing of concert and stage productions.

"Saxophon, Magie und Intensität. Christof Lauer, einer der großen Jazz-Saxophonisten Europas, war 25 Jahre lang NDR-Solist, spielte weitere Jahrzehnte im Ensemble des Hessischen Rundfunks und war Mitglied des Quintetts von Albert Mangelsdorff. „Talking to You" zeigt, wie dieser eigenwillige Musiker seine Geschichte durch Klänge erzählt und warum er nie aufhören wird, nach neuen Formen zu suchen."

Die Filmvorführung Im Rahmen des SEE THE SOUND Festivals wird von einem Saxophonkonzert von Christof Lauer begleitet. Im Anschluss an die Vorführung findet ein Gespräch mit dem Künstler und der Regisseurin des Films, Lucie Herrmann statt.

Seit den 1970er Jahren hat Christof Lauer in den unterschiedlichsten Formationen seine Virtuosität, Originalität und Vielseitigkeit auf seinem Instrument, dem Saxophon, demonstriert, ob im Duo, Trio, Quartett, Quintett oder bei der NDR-Bigband.

Mit der am 22.05.2026 erscheinenden Solo-Saxophon-Einspielung Odyssea Sonorum, seit mehr als zehn Jahren die erste unter seinem eigenen Namen, betritt Lauer ein für ihn neues Terrain. Ohne instrumentale Begleitung kreiert er mit Tenor- und Sopransaxophon einen Klangraum, den er ganz allein musikalisch gestaltet. Das Album enthält Liveaufnahmen aus einer Konzertreihe, die Christof Lauer zusammen mit der Jazz-Initiative Frankfurt 2019 ins Leben gerufen hat.

Alle Konzerte wurden mitgeschnitten, und letztendlich entschied sich Lauer für drei Stücke aus dem Jahr 2025 mit insgesamt 52 Minuten Laufzeit. Sie kommen gänzlich ohne thematischen Rahmen aus, sind rein spontan entstandene Improvisationen. Dabei sind sie alles andere als Monologe eines großen Musikers, sondern vielmehr musikalische Zwiegespräche mit sich selbst, den im Kirchenschiff resonierenden Tönen und dem Publikum vor Ort. Spontaneität im Spiel setzt Risikobereitschaft voraus. Ein Teil des Reizes dieser Konzertreihe, den das Publikum bei jedem Ton spürt. „Es hat für mich einen besonderen Reiz in dem weiten Kirchenraum zu spielen“, sagt Christof Lauer“, „Aus dem Moment heraus entsteht eine Klang- und Motivreise, auf die ich meine Zuhörer mitnehmen will.“

Über den Film

Es geht um die Liebe zum Jazz und besonders um die Liebe zum Saxophon, jenem magischen Instrument.
"Ich erzähle etwas von mir, indem ich spiele und Töne zusammensetze. Das ist meine Geschichte", sagt Christof Lauer. Er zählt zu den großen Jazz-Saxophonisten Europas, hat mit den Stars der internationalen Jazzszene gespielt, z.B. mit Carla Bley, Joachim Kühn, Palle Danielsson, Daniel Humair. Er war Mitglied in Albert Mangelsdorffs Quintett und im "United Jazz + Rock Ensemble", in der NDR-Bigband und Solist im Jazzensemble des Hessischen Rundfunks.

Wie lässt sich die Magie erklären, die vom Tenor- oder Sopransaxophon ausgeht? Wer stellt eigentlich diese Instrumente her? Und wie hat es Christof Lauer geschafft, seine Liebe zum Jazz über Jahrzehnte immer wieder neu zu entfachen?
"Talking To You" dringt ein in den musikalischen Kosmos eines eigenwilligen Musikers, der jegliche Routine ablehnt und beharrlich an neuen Formen arbeitet. Hauptsache: "Intensiv muss es sein".

"Endlich nimmt hier ein Musikporträt seinen Gegenstand ernst und blendet einzelne Stücke nicht schon nach wenigen Sekunden aus. Lucie Herrmann, die bereits mit dem Porträt 'Oh Horn!' dem Frankfurter 'Posaunen-Weltmeister' Albert Mangelsdorff ein Denkmal gesetzt hat, und ihrem großartigen Kamera- und Schnittpartner Bert Schmidt ist mit 'Talking To You' nicht nur ein Hymnus auf einen der wichtigsten Verfechter zeitgenössischer Improvisationskunst gelungen. Dieser Film ist viel mehr als ein Musikerporträt. Er ist eine leidenschaftliche Liebeserklärung an den Jazz."

Mit dem Screening des HELIX - Films gab es zum Abschluss des Filmfestivals ein feinen Premieren-Abend hier im o-ton. Ein Werkstattgespräch über die Entstehung des Film wurde mit Sebastian Gramss und Maurice Graf vom "See-The-Sound-Festival"- Leiter Michael Aust geführt.

Maurice Graf begleitete den renommierten und international tätigen Kölner Kontrabassist Sebastian Gramss über zwei Jahre bei der Entwicklung seines musikalischen HELIX Konzept. Im HELIX-Projekt probten, erforschten und entwickelten über 80 Musiker mit Gramss zusammen neue Zeitverläufe innerhalb improvisierter und geschriebene Musiken in verschiedensten Formationen von Trio bis orchestraler Besetzung.

HELIX is a genre-crossing, non-linear concept of time and tempo created by the Cologne-based composer and double bassist Sebastian Gramss.Through the staggered fading in and out of multiple overlapping rhythms, the illusion of endless accelerations or decelerations is created.

The Helix system is applied in electronic and computer-generated music to create continuous tempo changes. Since 2022, this concept has been applied with live musicians for the first time. The practical implementation with performers/musicians is a research project by the Cologne music groups “STATES OF PLAY” and “METEORS.” As part of a basic research project commissioned by the Kunststiftung NRW and the city of Cologne, over 80 musicians are involved internationally in 2024. The focus of the research is in Cologne, Germany

Von einem Traum inspiriert, kehrt Musiker und Filmemacher Anil Eraslan nach Istanbul zurück, um gemeinsam mit lokalen Musiker:innen einen Film zu schaffen. Sie verwandeln ihre Klangträume in Aufführungen an ungewöhnlichen Orten der Stadt. Das Werk verbindet osmanisch-türkische Musik, elektronische Klänge und freie Improvisation und fängt Istanbuls avantgardistische Szene ein – zwischen nostalgischer  Vergangenheit und lebendiger, sich wandelnder Zukunft.

Pianist James Carson has developed a new form of music and over the last twelve years has produced and directed Cabin Music, a feature film, to share it with the world. A childhood prodigy born with perfect pitch, Carson composed complete songs at age four and had his music performed by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at age sixteen, leading him to be called “one of the most gifted rising stars” by the Edmonton Journal. When he attended the New England Conservatory, however, his studies with Joe Maneri, Cecil Taylor, and the poet Robert Creeley led him to a dramatic life change: he walked away from music and spent two years backpacking and farming overland from Spain to Japan. After his return to Northern Alberta, Canada, he then spent five years designing, building, and practicing in a remote strawbale cabin. The musical result was multilayered, detailed, meditative, and harmonious. "I wanted to play the whole piano at once,” says Carson, “in the same way that a single breeze can cause the entire forest to dance and tremble in unison.”

Praised by Pulitzer-Prize-winning composer Milton Babbitt, who wrote of his “astonished joy” in response to Carson’s “exceptional pianism”, and by his teacher Robert Creeley, who called him a “genial genius”, Carson has been labeled a “meditative… piano texturalist” (Time Out New York), who creates “trance-inducing… shimmering arpeggiated figures, played with such speed as to invoke Coltrane-esque ‘sheets of sound’” (Feast of Music), on a “quest to create sounds that reflect the magnificence of nature” (Times of India). Carson creates wholly new music with each performance by removing his own intentions and instead receiving and channeling all forces and influences at the piano, both within and beyond the performance space, resulting in “delicate music surrounded by the aura of silence.” (Boston Phoenix). He lives in New York and returns regularly to his cabin.

Paul Dessau (1894-1979) ist Geigenwunderkind, wird Assistent von Otto Klemperer und schließlich versierter Dirigent. Er schreibt Operetten- und Filmmusik – sowohl zu Bergfilmen mit Leni Riefenstahl von Regisseur Arnold Fanck als auch zu Trickfilmen Walt Disneys. Als überzeugter Kommunist geht Paul Dessau 1948 in die DDR. Er arbeitet mit Bertolt Brecht sowie seiner vierten Frau, der Regie-Ikone Ruth Berghaus, und prägt maßgeblich die sozialistische Musikszene und Bühnenkunst. Er wird zum nach außen gefeierten, nach innen angefeindeten DDR-Staatskomponisten. 

»Paul Dessau - Let's hope for the best« von Anne-Kathrin Peitz skizziert ein Künstlerleben zwischen Anpassung und Abstoßung, politischem Idealismus und musikalischer Individualität, in dem sich wie unter einem Brennglas die wechselhafte deutsch-deutsche Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts markant verdichtet.

Das Filmportrait spürt dabei bewusst den Widersprüchen in Dessaus Charakter, Leben und Wirken nach und bettet den Menschen und seine Musik in den historischen Kontext ein. Die filmische Annährung an den Protagonisten und seinen Klangkosmos wird dabei ganz wörtlich aber auch im übertragenen Sinne zu einem Puzzle, dessen einzelne – oft auch disparate Teile – sich langsam zu einem Gesamtbild zusammenfügen. Ergänzend suchen Interviewpartner – von Politiker Gregor Gysi bis zum ehemaligen Konzerthaus-Intendanten Frank Schneider oder dem amerikanischen Jazz-Komponisten Jack Cooper sowie Komponist und Pianist Steffen Schleiermacher – nicht nur mit Worten, sondern tatsächlich puzzelnd das Portrait Paul Dessaus entstehen zu lassen.
